In 2025, global exports of macadamia nuts generated approximately US$756 million in international trade revenue.
Overall, export performance for macadamia nuts declined by an average of 19.7% compared with 2021, when total export value stood at $941.7 million. Despite this long-term contraction, the market showed a modest year-over-year recovery, rising 4.5% from $723.8 million in 2024.
In terms of product form, in-shell macadamia nuts accounted for 32.6% of global export earnings in 2025. The remaining 67.4% came from shelled macadamia nuts, which saw their share increase from 59.3% in the previous year (2024), indicating growing demand for processed nut products.
Macadamia nuts originate from the fruits of the macadamia tree, a species known for its relatively shallow root system, making it vulnerable to strong winds and storms. These nuts are naturally rich in selenium, an antioxidant associated with improved blood circulation, immune support, and reduced inflammation.
Commercial cultivation of macadamia began in the 1880s in Hawaii after Australian seeds were introduced. Today, South Africa has surpassed Australia and become the leading global producer since the 2010s.
Macadamia nuts are considered one of the most expensive nuts globally due to their long production cycle and labor-intensive harvesting process. Interestingly, while macadamias are toxic to dogs, they are sometimes fed to large parrots in captivity, as these birds are capable of breaking the hard shells to access the edible kernel.
