In 2025, worldwide exports of fresh and chilled salmon reached an estimated total value of US$17.6 billion.


This reflects an overall expansion of about 16.1% compared with 2021, when global salmon shipments were valued at roughly $15.3 billion across all exporting nations.


However, momentum slowed in the short term, with global export value rising only slightly by 1.7% year over year, up from $17.5 billion in 2024.


The leading five exporters—Norway, Sweden, the United Kingdom, Chile, and Canada—dominated the market. Together, they accounted for approximately 85% of total global salmon exports in 2025, slightly higher than the 83.8% share recorded the previous year.


From a regional perspective, Europe was the dominant exporting hub, generating around $15.5 billion in shipments (88.1% of global exports). Latin America followed with 5.9% (including the Caribbean), while North America contributed about 4%. Smaller shares came from Oceania (1.9%, mainly Australia and New Zealand), Asia (0.1%), and Africa (0.001%).


For classification purposes, fresh or chilled salmon is primarily recorded under HS code 030214 for Atlantic and Danube salmon, while Pacific salmon is categorized under 030213. Processed salmon products fall under HS 160411.

Top Fresh or Chilled Salmon Exporting Countries (2025)

The following are the 15 leading exporters of fresh and chilled salmon ranked by total export value in 2025.


Norway remained the dominant supplier with US$8.4 billion (47.9%), followed by Sweden at $3.8 billion (21.6%). The United Kingdom contributed $1.1 billion (6.2%), while Chile reached $1 billion (5.9%).


Mid-tier exporters included Canada ($583.5M, 3.3%) and the Faroe Islands ($582.2M, 3.3%), followed by Denmark ($430.1M, 2.4%), Iceland ($321.2M, 1.8%), Australia ($249.5M, 1.4%), and Finland ($212M, 1.2%).


Rounding out the list were the Netherlands ($179.5M, 1%), France ($152.6M, 0.9%), the United States ($115.8M, 0.7%), Ireland ($103M, 0.6%), and Spain ($46M, 0.3%).


Together, these 15 economies accounted for approximately 98.6% of global salmon export value in 2025.


In terms of growth performance since 2024, the strongest gains were recorded by Spain (+29.3%), the United States (+24.7%), Australia (+15.6%), and Finland (+14%).


On the downside, declines were led by Denmark (-30%), France (-15.5%), Chile (-8.8%), the Faroe Islands (-7.2%), and Canada (-6.5%).


Global Imports of Fresh or Chilled Salmon

Worldwide imports of fresh/chilled salmon reached roughly US$16.8 billion in 2025, reflecting a 13.3% increase since 2021, but only a marginal 0.4% rise compared with 2024.


The top 15 importing markets were:

Sweden ($3.8B, 22.8%), Poland ($1.6B, 9.3%), mainland China ($1.4B, 8%), the United States ($1.3B, 7.9%), and France ($1.1B, 6.7%).

Other major importers included Brazil, Denmark, Spain, the United Kingdom, Italy, the Netherlands, Germany, Finland, Lithuania, and South Korea.


Collectively, these markets represented about 86.2% of global salmon imports in 2025.


Growth leaders since 2024 included mainland China (+26.5%), Spain (+21.9%), Finland (+6.7%), and Sweden (+3.9%).


Meanwhile, the steepest declines were seen in Denmark (-23.4%), France (-15.9%), South Korea (-8.9%), Germany (-7.5%), and Brazil (-7.5%).


Prepared or Preserved Salmon Exports

In addition to fresh and chilled forms, global trade in prepared or preserved salmon totaled about US$1 billion in 2025.


This segment slipped slightly by 0.6% year over year, though it expanded by 19.6% compared with 2021.


It represented roughly 5.7% of total fresh/chilled salmon export value, a slight increase from 5.6% in the previous year.


Top exporters of processed salmon included Poland ($209.2M, 20.8%), Lithuania ($133.9M, 13.3%), Thailand ($103.4M, 10.3%), the United States ($86.5M, 8.6%), and Vietnam ($80M, 7.9%).


Additional exporters were Denmark, Chile, Germany, mainland China, Canada, France, Ireland, Sweden, Belgium, and the Netherlands.


Together, these countries contributed 93.2% of global prepared salmon exports in 2025.


The strongest growth was recorded in France (+61.7%), mainland China (+29.4%), Chile (+17.7%), Netherlands (+15.7%), and Denmark (+5.9%).


Sharp declines were seen in Canada (-34.5%), Vietnam (-17.5%), the United States (-11.5%), Germany (-11.1%), and Belgium (-10.7%).


Prepared or Preserved Salmon Imports

Global imports of processed salmon also reached approximately US$1 billion in 2025, rising 4.5% from 2024 and 2.1% compared with 2021.


This category accounted for about 6% of total salmon import value, slightly higher than the 5.8% recorded in 2024.


The top importing markets were Germany ($262.6M, 26.2%), the United States ($152.9M, 15.3%), Japan ($107.8M, 10.8%), the United Kingdom ($74.6M, 7.4%), and France ($62.2M, 6.2%).


They were followed by Canada, Australia, Italy, Denmark, Sweden, the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Spain, and Taiwan.


Altogether, these 15 markets represented 89.1% of global imports of prepared salmon in 2025.


On the growth side, the strongest increases were seen in Spain (+54.6%), the United States (+30.8%), France (+17.3%), Japan (+16.1%), and Italy (+12.9%).


Conversely, the largest declines came from Belgium (-31.1%), Canada (-22.6%), Sweden (-13.8%), and the United Kingdom (-12.7%).
