- In June of this year, the European Commission announced plans to impose higher tariffs on electric vehicles imported from China, citing concerns that these vehicles "significantly benefit from unfair subsidies," which pose a "threat of economic harm" to European electric vehicle manufacturers.

- On August 20, the European Commission released a draft decision stating that "final countervailing duties will be imposed on battery electric vehicles (BEVs) imported from China."

- The Commission indicated that Tesla’s imports into the EU market will now face a 9% tariff, which is lower than the initially expected rate of 20.8%.

- Tesla, led by Elon Musk, had requested a recalculation of the proposed tariffs to reflect the specific subsidies the company receives in China.

The EU announced that the tariff on Tesla vehicles imported from China would be reduced from 20.8% to 9%, and it also plans to lower a range of proposed import tariffs for other electric vehicle companies.

In June, the EU stated its intention to impose higher tariffs on electric vehicles imported from China, arguing that these vehicles "significantly benefit from unfair subsidies" and pose a "threat of economic harm" to European manufacturers.

The European Commission, the EU’s executive arm, issued preliminary findings concluding that the value chain of Chinese electric vehicles "benefits from unfair subsidies" and that imposing "provisional countervailing duties" on electric vehicles imported from China was in the EU's interest.

On August 20, the European Commission released a draft decision stating that "final countervailing duties will be imposed on battery electric vehicles (BEVs) imported from China."

The regulatory body mentioned that after receiving comments on the planned tariffs from relevant parties, it would "make slight adjustments to the proposed tariff rates based on reasonable comments on the provisional measures."

Tesla's electric vehicles manufactured in China and imported into the EU will face a 9% tariff. This rate is lower than the initially expected 20.8% determined in the EU's earlier decision in July.

Following the release of the EU’s draft decision, Tesla's stock price rose by more than 1% during early trading in the United States.

The EU indicated that its decision grants Tesla a lower, separate tariff rate as an exporter from China.

Previously, Elon Musk’s electric vehicle manufacturer made a "substantiated request" to the EU, asking for a recalculation of the planned tariffs on its vehicles manufactured in China to reflect the specific subsidies it receives there.

The tariff rate for BYD, the electric vehicle company backed by Warren Buffett, was reduced from 17.4% to 17%; for Geely, from 19.9% to 19.3%; and for SAIC, from 37.6% to 36.3%. Due to the time difference with China, BYD, Geely, and SAIC did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The European Commission noted that other companies cooperating with the EU’s investigation into China’s high electric vehicle subsidies would face a 21.3% tariff. This rate is higher than the 20.8% tariff imposed on cooperating companies in the EU’s earlier July ruling.

For those countries that do not cooperate, a 36.3% import tariff will be imposed, down from the previous 37.6%.
