Vietnam's chili pepper exports grew significantly in the first quarter of this year, with 3,141 tons of exports valued at $8.1 million, an increase of 17.6% in volume and 52.8% in value compared to the same period in 2023. This figure highlights the continued high price of chili peppers, which averaged US$2,610 per tonne, up 28% year-on-year.
The majority of these exports (nearly 88%) went to China, totaling 2,753 tons, while Laos accounted for 7% at 259 tons. Chilli peppers, like other agricultural products, are of major economic importance, with global trade valued at US$35 billion annually. The Asia-Pacific region is a leader in the production and trade of chili peppers, with China being the largest exporter. Vietnamese chili peppers are known for their spicy flavor and variety. Last year, Vietnam's chili pepper exports increased from 10,173 tons to US$20 million, a 107% increase year-on-year. The Mekong Delta region is considered the “capital” of chili cultivation in Vietnam and, together with the central highlands, contributes significantly to the country's chili production.
