Exports of Korean red pepper paste and various sauces hit a record high in 2023, driven by the growing global popularity of Korean food and cultural contents. According to the Korea Customs Service, overseas exports of these goods, including the iconic red chili sauce "gochujang," soy sauce and other seasonings, totaled $380.4 million, up 6.2 percent from the previous year. In terms of export volume, Korea exported 131,800 tons of these products last year, making it the second-largest export year after 2021.
The export growth was mainly driven by sauces, which amounted to $240.1 million, including popular products such as soy sauce used in "bulgogi" (Korean barbecue) and spicy "buldak" sauce used in hot chicken dishes. Bean-based sauces such as "doenjang" also contributed significantly, with exports amounting to $111 million. The United States became the largest market for Korean exports, accounting for 21.8 percent of the total, followed by China, Japan, Russia and Vietnam.
The record performance in exporting sauces to 139 countries was attributed to the growing global interest in Korean food and cultural products. An official from the Korea Customs Service noted that the surge in sauce exports is a direct result of the global appeal of Korean culinary and cultural products.
