Ethiopia's Ministry of Transportation and Logistics announced on Tuesday that vehicles will not be allowed to enter the country unless they are electric.
The ministry made the announcement while presenting its six-month performance report to the House of Peoples' Representatives (Ethiopian Parliament) Standing Committee on Urban Development and Transportation.
The Minister of Transport and Logistics, Alemu Sime, announced the completion of Ethiopia's Logistics Master Plan, which involves the implementation of "green transportation" in the East African country.
Sime said, "It has been decided that cars cannot enter Ethiopia unless they are electric."
However, the affordability of electric cars poses a potential challenge for a large portion of the Ethiopian population, not forgetting that the percentage of the population that can afford a car is still negligible.
He further explained that the establishment of charging stations for electric vehicles is in progress. The minister said one of the reasons behind the decision is Ethiopia's inability to import gasoline due to limited foreign exchange resources.
It is not clear when the policy will come into effect, nor is it clear whether vehicles transiting from overseas will be subject to the new policy.
There are reports that the Ethiopian government will introduce value-added tax (VAT), excise tax and surtax exemptions for electric vehicles in 2022.
In addressing challenges in the industry such as traffic accidents, the Ministry of Transport emphasized the need for coordination and cooperation with stakeholders, thorough inspections and follow-up to address issues in the transport sector.
