Turkey's tomato exports rose 42.8 percent year-on-year to $538.7 million (TL 16 billion) in 2023, according to data compiled by Anadolu Agency (AA) on Saturday.
According to data compiled by the Southeast Anatolian Exporters' Association (GAIB) AA, Turkey exported tomatoes worth about $377.19 million to 54 countries in 2022.
Last year, tomato exports amounted to 588,418 tons, up 42.8 percent year-on-year, to some 52 countries, including Romania, Ukraine, Poland, Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Spain, Denmark, Azerbaijan, Russia and Qatar.
Romania topped the list of countries with the most Turkish exports in 2023, with $91.98 million. It was followed by Ukraine ($64.6 million), Poland ($56.65 million) and Germany ($53.98 million).
Halil Pekdemir, president of the Association of Greenhouse Investors and Producers, told AA that the significant increase in tomato exports in 2023 was welcome.
"Turkey's tomato exports will increase to US$538.72 million by 2023, a development that contributes to our producers, exporters and national economy. The expansion of the tomato market will encourage entrepreneurs to establish new greenhouses. New investments will contribute to employment and national economic gains," he explained.
Noting that the government's support for the greenhouse program is clearly reflected in the export figures, Pekdemir expressed his gratitude to President Erdoğan and the relevant ministers for their continued support in the new year.
Pekdemir said that Turkey aims to be ranked number one in Europe in terms of greenhouse production and that "the support for the greenhouse sector is very satisfying for us. We aim to further increase our market share in tomato exports in 2024."
"With the support of our government, we are making rapid progress towards this goal. When we look at the exporting countries and the number of exports, we can see that we are exporting higher volumes to these two different countries compared to the previous period." existing countries," Peckdemir noted.
