The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Safety (KPKM) has assured that the supply of onions will not be affected following the Indian government's ban on onion exports yesterday.
The ministry's minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said the ministry was prepared for such developments.
"I have yet to receive official confirmation but I am assured that there will be no shortage of onions in the country.
"For onion supply, we also import from China, Thailand and Pakistan as well as several other countries," he said at a meeting after the Integrity Malacca 2023 conference today.
Integrity Party chairman Mohamad Shabu said the question was whether prices would rise and the matter was under the purview of the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry.
The government has decided to change the export of onions from the free category to the prohibited category until March 31, MNA quoted the Directorate General of Foreign Trade of India as saying today.
This comes in the wake of rising food prices and political unrest, especially with the upcoming parliamentary elections in India next year.
India is Malaysia's largest exporter of onions at 36%, while China and Thailand account for 20% and 7% respectively.
