The Horticultural Crops Directorate (HCD) has announced that the FY 2023/2024 avocado season will close on November 3, 2023 This means that exports of Hass, Pinkerton, Fuerte and Jumbo avocados by sea will no longer be allowed beyond this date.
HCD made the decision after conducting a survey to assess avocado fruit ripeness indices in key production areas. The survey found that many avocados were not yet ripe and harvesting them now could disrupt the crop cycle and reduce the quality of the fruit.
HCD said that after November 3, 2023, air shipments of avocados within the East African Community (EAC) region will still be allowed, but all shipments will be subject to inspection. Exporters will also be required to provide traceability information on all shipments.
Director General of Agriculture, Willis Audi, said the ministry will continue to monitor avocado ripening trends and patterns and may review the notification in mid-January 2024.
The end of the avocado season will have many implications for exporters, importers and processors.
1. Exporters will need to ensure that all avocados are shipped by sea by 3/11/2023. Any avocados not shipped by this date will need to be stored or processed.
2. Importers will need to adjust their purchasing plans to account for the shortened avocado season. They may also need to pay higher prices for avocados shipped by air.
3. Processors will need to adjust their production plans to cope with the shorter avocado season. They may also need to source avocados from other countries to meet demand. The end of the avocado season is a positive development that will help protect the quality of avocados in the country and sustain the industry in the long term.
