The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, Kathleen Day, on Tuesday announced a further extension until May 31, 2024 of China's Section 301 tariff exclusions for 352 Chinese imports and 77 COVID-19-related goods.
The administration of former President Donald Trump used Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, which is designed to combat unfair behavior by trading partners, to impose tariffs on China in 2018 and 2019.
The import tariff exemptions include industrial parts such as pumps and motors, some auto parts and chemicals, bicycles and vacuum cleaners. Exclusions related to the new coronavirus include medical products such as masks, exam gloves and hand-washing wipes.
The exclusions were scheduled to expire Dec. 31, Dye's office said in a statement. Extending the deadline to May 31 would allow for further consideration under the statutory four-year review.
Citing security concerns, U.S. President Joe Biden retained additional tariffs imposed by the previous Trump administration on a large number of Chinese exports and added new restrictions banning the export of advanced semiconductors and their manufacturing equipment.
Trump imposed tariffs on thousands of imports from China in 2018 and 2019, worth about $370 billion at the time, after a Section 301 investigation found that China had misappropriated U.S. intellectual property and forced U.S. companies to transfer sensitive technology to conduct business.
China has called the US 301 tariffs on Chinese imports "discriminatory".
The tariffs are just one component of recent tensions between the U.S. and China. Other contentious issues include Taiwan, espionage allegations, human rights and the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Last week, China also extended its tariff exemption for some U.S.-origin imports until July 31, 2024, the Ministry of Finance said.
