In 2023, global cashew exports totaled $6.64 billion in revenue. This figure shows a marginal decline of -0.1% compared to the previous peak of $6.65 billion recorded in 2019. However, year-on-year, exports saw an encouraging growth of 6.9% compared to the $6.22 billion exported in 2022.
Cashews, valued as a popular snack, are harvested from the fruits of large, tropical evergreen trees that can grow up to 46 feet (14 meters) tall. The versatile nut is used in cooking, especially in salad dressings, and is a key ingredient in making cashew butter.
By value, the five leading cashew exporters—Vietnam, Ivory Coast (Côte d'Ivoire), India, Cambodia, and Nigeria—together accounted for 71.9% of the global cashew export market in 2023.
Breaking it down by continent, Asia emerged as the dominant supplier, contributing 50.4% of the global cashew exports with shipments valued at $3.35 billion. Africa followed closely behind with a 39.2% share, while Europe accounted for 9%. Exports from Latin America (excluding Mexico, but including the Caribbean) made up 1%, and North America and Oceania contributed a combined 0.3% and 0.002%, respectively, with Australia leading the latter.
In terms of imports, the five top importers—Vietnam, India, United States, Germany, and Netherlands—together bought about 66.8% of the global cashew imports by dollar value.
When looking at imports by continent, Asia was the largest buyer, with 57.9% of the global cashew imports. Europe followed at 24.4%, while North America and Oceania made up 14.5% and 1.7%, respectively. Africa and Latin America accounted for 1.1% and 0.4% of global imports, excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean.

The total global spending on cashew imports in 2023 was $6.46 billion, marking a 26.3% increase from $7.2 billion five years earlier in 2019. However, when compared to $8.4 billion in 2022, the total spent on cashew imports dropped by -22.9% year-on-year.
