In 2023, global fresh pear exports reached a total value of $2.75 billion.
The export of pears saw a 9.5% increase over the past five years, compared to $2.51 billion in 2019.
From 2022 to 2023, pear exports grew by 8.1%, surpassing $2.54 billion the previous year.
There are over 3,000 pear varieties worldwide, according to Northern Nester. Popular types include Anjou (green and red), Bartlett, Bosc (russet brown), Asian pears (round), and French Butter pears. Bosc is often considered the tastiest, while Anjou and Bartlett are known for being especially juicy.
Like apples, pears are often eaten in bite-sized slices, with the skin typically being edible. However, some consumers prefer peeling them before eating. Pears can also be cooked or dried.
The top five pear exporters—China, the Netherlands, Belgium, Argentina, and South Africa—accounted for 66.7% of global pear exports in 2023.
From a continental perspective, European countries led pear exports, contributing 47.7% of the global total, followed by Asia with 27.3%. Latin American countries (excluding Mexico) made up 11.8%, while Africa, North America, and Oceania contributed 7.2%, 5.6%, and 0.5% respectively, led by Australia and New Zealand.
Regarding imports, Germany, Indonesia, Italy, the United Kingdom, and Brazil were the top five importers in 2023. Together, these five countries accounted for 34.8% of global pear imports.
When examining imports continentally, European countries were the largest importers, with 52.4% of global imports, followed by Asia at 27.5% and North America at 9.8%.
In 2023, the average price for pear imports was $1,223 per ton, reflecting a 9.6% inflation rate compared to the $1,116 per ton in 2022.
