Perfumes continue to hold significant global demand, with exports from various countries reaching an impressive total of USD 27.2 billion in 2023.


This marks a notable increase in the global value of exported perfumes, which has grown by an average of 28.1% since 2019, when total shipments amounted to USD 21.2 billion. Between 2022 and 2023, the international sale of perfumes saw a 10% rise, up from USD 24.7 billion in the previous year.


The five leading exporters of perfumes globally—France, Spain, Germany, Italy, and the United States—collectively made up nearly two-thirds (64.2%) of the world's perfume exports in 2023.


European countries dominated the perfume export market in 2023, with shipments valued at USD 20.3 billion, representing roughly three-quarters (74.6%) of the global total. Asian exporters followed with a 14.1% share, while 8% of global perfume exports originated from North America.


Smaller portions of global perfume exports came from Latin America (2.3%) excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean, Africa (0.6%), and Oceania (0.3%), predominantly Australia.


For classification purposes, perfumes and toilet waters fall under the 4-digit Harmonized Tariff System code 3303. This code specifically excludes items such as aftershave lotions, personal deodorants, and hair lotions.

The following are the 15 countries with the highest dollar value in exported perfumes for 2023:

· France: USD 7.6 billion (27.9% of total exports)

· Spain: USD 3.2 billion (11.8%)

These top 15 countries accounted for 89.7% of global perfume exports in 2023.


Among these leading exporters, mainland China, Belgium, Italy, and the United States showed the most significant growth between 2022 and 2023, with increases of 49.6%, 47.9%, 40.1%, and 26.2%, respectively. In contrast, the United Arab Emirates was the only top exporter to experience a decline, with a significant drop of 67.9% in perfume export sales compared to 2022.
