With a history dating back to the 15th century, Scotch whisky must be made from one of three ingredients: malt, wheat or rye, and then aged in oak barrels for at least three years.
Whisky is also one of the country's biggest exports, with more than a billion bottles sold around the world each year.
Even if you're not from the UK or neighboring countries, you've probably heard of some of Scotland's best-known whisky brands sold around the world, such as Laphroaig, Talisker, Glenmorangie, and of course Johnnie Walker, but there are hundreds more varieties to sample. Sampling.
France was the main market for Scotch whisky exports in 2023, exporting 174 million 70-liter bottles that year, followed by India with 167 million bottles. The United States, Japan and Germany followed with 127 million, 60 million and 59 million bottles respectively.
Continued demand for Scotch whisky from traditional markets in EU countries such as France, Germany, Spain and Poland helped drinks exports from the single market reach almost £1.6 billion. The US remains the largest export market for Scotch whisky by value outside the EU, with 2022 sales of over £1 billion. Exports to countries such as India and Singapore have also grown significantly.
Hazlewoods associate partner Rebecca Copping (Rebecca Copping) said: "British heritage brands have successfully established themselves as luxury brands in the international drinks market. Much of this success is down to young, affluent consumers buying premium drinks brands that symbolize status and success."
"Consumer spending on luxury goods has held up well despite economic volatility and high interest rates across much of the world, although luxury sales growth is slowing," Copping added. "The boom in luxury sales following the outbreak has certainly helped to increase UK drinks exports."
Largest Exports by a Single Item
Whisky is the UK's largest single food and drink export by value, and the
Scotch Whisky Association is aiming to increase exports by a further £1 billion
over the next five years.
Export growth will depend heavily on the UK-India Free Trade Agreement, which addresses key barriers such as the 150% tariff on Indian whisky imports, which makes Scotch significantly more expensive than Indian whisky.
"The industry is now focused on long-term growth into larger, untapped markets,'' Copping concluded. "The UK government can support this by offering trade agreements that lower barriers to expansion."
"While whisky plays a huge role in export growth, this is also a success story for UK drinks brands focused on gin and other spirits. Traditional images and luxury brands appeal to many consumers, particularly in emerging markets such as India and Singapore."
