Yemen's top ten imports account for almost three-fifths (58.9%) of the total value of products it purchases from other countries.
Imported footwear had the strongest growth among Yemen's top 10 import categories, increasing by 62.5% over the five-year period starting in 2018. In second place was cereal or dairy products (up 55.3%), followed by grains (up 45.4%) followed by knitted or crocheted clothing and accessories (up 36.2%).
Yemen's imports of plastics (either materials or plastic products) are the only product category to decline between 2021 and 2022.

In 2022, Yemen exported $1.71 billion worth of products to the world. Compared to $2.2 billion in 2021, exports shrank -22.1%.

Yemen's top 10 export categories accounted for 96.1% of its total global exports by value.
Perfumes and cosmetics are the fastest growing of the top ten export categories, growing by 4,598% from 2021 to 2022. The second highest improvement in export sales was in steel and metal, which grew by 1,084%. Yemen's exports of plastic materials and plastic products ranked third in terms of volume increase, growing by 510.4 percent.
The only decline in Yemen's top 10 export categories was fish, down -2.2% year-on-year.
At the more detailed 4-digit HS code level, crude oil was Yemen's most valuable export, accounting for two-thirds (64.7%) of the Middle Eastern country's total exports. In second place was iron or steel scrap (6.6%), followed by molluscs (3.6%), copper scrap (3%), frozen whole fish (2.9%), telephony equipment, including smartphones (2.8%), e-waste (2%), plastics scrap (1.9%), aluminum scrap (1.7%), and then bran and other residues (0.8%).
