Imports

Iran's imports in 2022 amounted to $27 billion. Compared to the same period in 2021, international imports of Iranian imports swelled by -49.1% from $53 billion.

Major International Buyers of Iranian Exports

The latest country-specific data show that Iran's imports are supplied mainly by exporters from the United Arab Emirates (31.2% of Iran's total), mainland China (24.1%), Turkey (10%), Germany (3.6 %), Russia (3.1%), India (3%), Switzerland (2.9%), Iraq (2.3%), the United Kingdom (2.2%), Netherlands (1.7 %), Italy (1.4 %) and Oman (1.2 %).

1. Cereals: $4.5 billion (16.6% of total imports)

2. Machinery including computers: $3.8 billion (14%)

3. Vehicles: $2.2 billion (8.1%)

4. Motors, equipment: $1.9 billion (7.1%)

5. Oilseeds: $1.8 billion (6.9%)

6. Animal and vegetable fats, oils, waxes: $1.1 billion (3.9%)

7. Optical, technical, medical equipment: $865 million (3.2%)

8. Pharmaceuticals: $821.2 million (3%)

9. Plastics, plastic products: $818.1 million (3%)

10. Organic chemicals: $677.3 million (2.5%)


Iran's top ten imports by value account for more than two-thirds (68.3%) of the total value of products it purchases from other countries. There are two leading product categories, vehicles (up 5.7% from 2021) and oilseeds (up 1.3%).


Iran's biggest declines were in electrical machinery and equipment (down -74.6%), organic chemicals (down -66.5%), animal and vegetable fats, oils and waxes (down -61.6%) and then pharmaceuticals (down -57.3%).



Exports

Iran's exports to the world in 2022 are valued at $15.6 billion.


Iran's top 5 exports are ethylene polymers, acyclic alcohols, refined copper and alloys, unwrought aluminum, and LPG.



Iran's Most Valuable Trading Partners

The latest country-specific data calculations show that Iran's exports are mainly purchased by importers from the following countries: Mainland China (37.1% of Iran's total), Iraq (16.5%), Turkey (11.3%), the United States of America (U.A.E.) (9.1%), Afghanistan (3.4%), India (3.4%), Pakistan (2.3%), Indonesia (2%), Thailand (1.5%), Oman (1.3%), Russia (1.1%) and Uzbekistan (0.7%).



Iran's Top 10 Export Products

1. Plastics, plastic products: $3.5 billion (22.5% of total exports)

2. Fossil fuels including oil: $1.8 billion (11.7%)

3. Organic chemicals: $1.5 billion (9.5%)

4. Copper: $1.4 billion (8.8%)

5. Steel: $1.1 billion (7.2%)

6. Aluminum: $1 billion (6.5%)

7. Fruits, nuts: $785.4 million (5%)

8. Salt, sulfur, stone, cement: $465.2 million (3%)

9. Ore, slag, ash: $420.6 million (2.7%)

10. Zinc: $386.3 million (2.5%)


Iran's top 10 exports account for 79.3% of its total global exports.


Aluminum is the fastest growing of the top 10 export categories, increasing 180.8% from 2021 to 2022. The second highest improvement in export sales was copper, which grew by 56%. Shipments of Iran's ores, slag and ash product categories increased the third fastest, by 44.6 percent.


The biggest drop among Iran's top 10 export categories was mineral fuels, including oil, which fell -89.1% year-on-year. Iran's crude oil, LPG and petroleum coke exports saw the steepest decline.


At the more granular four-digit HS code level, ethylene polymers were Iran's most valuable export, accounting for 19.1% of the country's total exports. In second place were acyclic alcohols (7.1 %), refined copper and unwrought alloys (6.7 %), unwrought aluminium (6 %), liquefied petroleum gas (4.2 %), crude oil (3.6 %), miscellaneous nuts (2.6 %), iron ores or concentrates (2.4 %), unwrought zinc (2.4 %), and then semi-finished products made of iron or non-alloy steel (2.4 %).
