Plastics as materials and plastic products are the fastest growing of the country's top ten export categories, growing by 28.9% from 2021 to 2022. The second highest improvement in export sales was in iron and steel metal, which grew by 22.5 %. Knitted or crocheted apparel and accessories exports from the Dominican Republic grew the third fastest, up 22.3 %.
The worst decline among the Dominican Republic's top ten export categories was Gemstones and Precious Metals, down -17.1% year-over-year. This product category experienced lower international sales of gold and jewelry exports from the Dominican Republic.
Drilling down into the more detailed four-digit HTS codes, the Dominican Republic's most valuable export in 2022 is electronic medical equipment including X-rays (11.13% of the country's global total). In second place is unforged gold (11.12 %), followed by cigars and cigarettes (8.2 %), low-voltage switches or fuses (6.8 %), jewelry (5.3 %), ferro-alloys (4.3 %), knitted or crocheted T-shirts and tank tops (3.3 %), sewing threads and specialty pharmaceuticals (3.1 %), bananas and plantain (1.9 %), and then cocoa beans (1.7 %).
