In 2022, California imported $508.8 billion worth of products from around the world. This figure represents an 8.2 percent year-over-year increase from $470.3 billion in 2021.

The imported product with the largest cost increase from 2021 to 2022 compared to the same period last year is crude oil (up 46.2 percent). California also recorded double-digit increases in imports of solid-state semiconductor storage equipment (up 20.9 percent from 2021) and modems and similar receiving or transmitting equipment (up 15.1 percent).
The only decline among California's major imports was for small portable digital computers, which fell -10.6 percent from 2021 expenditures for this product.

Export
In 2022, California exported $185.5 billion worth of goods to the world. This amount represents a 6.8% increase from the 2021 value of $174.9 billion.
The highest-value products exported from California were civil aircraft, including engines or other parts, machines used in the manufacture of semiconductor equipment, or parts and accessories for such machines.Together, these goods accounted for nearly one-tenth (8.6%) of California's total exports in 2022.

Refined petroleum, excluding biodiesel, emerged as the fastest-growing of California's top 10 export categories, increasing 114.8 percent from 2021 to 2022. The second highest growth in export sales was for mechanical parts and components used in the manufacture of semiconductor equipment, up 15.1 percent . Shipments of civil aircraft, including engines or other parts, grew the third fastest, with a 9.1 percent increase in value.
The worst declines among California's top 10 exports were electric vehicles (down -16.6%) and machinery used to make semiconductor equipment (down -12.4%).
