According to trade data provider Descartes Systems Group (DSG.TO), in October, imports from China helped U.S. container imports surpass 2.4 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) for the fourth consecutive month. The total U.S. container import volume for October was 2.49 million TEUs, a 1% decrease from the previous month, and only 2.4% lower than the highest level of the year, recorded in July.
Imports from China amounted to 960,016 TEUs, an 8.3% increase compared to October 2023, reflecting a general upward trend this year. According to Descartes, the most commonly imported goods from China include furniture, bedding, toys, games, and sporting goods.
U.S. President Donald Trump's administration had pledged to impose a 60% tariff on goods from China and other countries, including Mexico. Some importers told Reuters they rushed to ship goods in order to avoid the additional tariffs on Chinese products.
In October, imports from China accounted for 38.5% of total U.S. container imports, down from the peak of 41.5% in February 2022.
Among the top 10 U.S. ports in October, seven experienced increased transportation delays, including the five largest ports on the East Coast and the Gulf of Mexico. Operations at these ports were disrupted earlier in the month due to a three-day strike.
The International Longshoremen's Association (ILA) and the U.S. Maritime Alliance (USMX) reached an agreement on wage issues, ending the deadlock. They set a new deadline of January 15 to reach a preliminary agreement on port automation and other unresolved issues.
