This represents an impressive 298.8% surge from just five years earlier in 2019, when electric car exports were valued at $25.9 billion. On a year-over-year basis, the value of global electric car exports increased by 61%, rising from $93.5 billion in 2022.
Electric cars accounted for 15.7% of the total revenue generated from all types of cars globally in 2023, a significant increase from the 3.4% share recorded in 2019. The total international car sales for 2023 were valued at $959.5 billion, highlighting the growing importance of electric car exports.
The top five exporters of electric cars—Germany, mainland China, Belgium, South Korea, and the United States—accounted for over three-quarters (78%) of global electric car exports in 2023.
Europe led the way in electric car exports, contributing $85.6 billion (56.9% of the global total). Asia followed with 37.5%, while North America accounted for 5.5% of the global electric car trade. Minor contributions came from Africa (0.13%), Oceania (0.01%), and Latin America (0.002%), excluding Mexico.
For research purposes, the relevant Harmonized Tariff System (HTS) code is 870380, which specifically pertains to electric motor-powered vehicles. This HTS code was first introduced in 2017, marking the beginning of recorded trade data for electric car exports.

On the other hand, France, Slovakia, and the United States experienced more modest growth, with increases of 19.5%, 24%, and 25.5%, respectively.
