In 2022, international butter exports from all nations reached a total of US$9.5 billion.
Since 2018, the value of globally exported butter has increased by an average of 16%, up from $8.2 billion. From 2021 to 2022, the value of exported butter saw a significant rise of 24.1%, increasing from $7.67 billion.
The leading exporters of butter are Ireland, New Zealand, Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany. These five countries collectively accounted for over two-thirds (67.9%) of the world's butter exports in 2022.
In 2022, Europe was the top continent for butter exports, with shipments valued at $7.13 billion, representing three-quarters (75%) of the global total. Oceania, primarily New Zealand and Australia, followed with 17.4%. Smaller contributions came from Asia (3.2%), North America (2.5%), Latin America (1.7%, excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean), and Africa (0.2%).

These 15 countries combined accounted for 93.1% of the global butter exports in 2022. The fastest-growing exporters since 2021 were India (up 145.4%), Poland (up 107.3%), Uruguay (up 83.7%), and Ukraine (up 69.3%). Italy was the only major exporter to see a decline, with a -1.1% decrease in international butter sales compared to 2021.
