In 2022, the global fresh pears export market reached a total value of USD 2.51 billion.

International sales of pears experienced a decline, decreasing by an average of 5.2% since 2018 when pear exports brought in $2.65 billion.

Year-over-year, the total value of pear exports dropped by 10% compared to $2.8 billion in 2021.

Worldwide, there are over 3,000 varieties of pears, according to Northern Nester. Popular varieties include green and red Anjou, Bartlett, russet brown Bosc, round-shaped Asian, and French Butter pears. Many consumers consider Bosc pears the tastiest, while Anjou and Bartlett pears are among the juiciest.

Similar to apples, fresh whole pears are often consumed in bite-sized slices. The skin of a pear is edible, although some consumers prefer to peel pears before eating. Pears can also be cooked or dried.

The top five exporters of pears—China, the Netherlands, Belgium, South Africa, and Argentina—accounted for about two-thirds (66.5%) of the world's pear exports in 2022.

From a continental perspective, European countries sold the highest dollar value of exported pears in 2022, with shipments valued at $1.15 billion or 45.7% of the global total. Asian exporters came in second at 25.9%. Smaller shares originated from Latin America excluding Mexico (12.5%) but including the Caribbean, Africa (9.2%), North America (5.9%), and Oceania (0.7%) led by Australia and New Zealand.

On the import side, the top five importers of pears in 2022 were Indonesia, Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Italy. Together, these five countries accounted for about one-third (33.9%) of globally imported pears.

These percentages suggest a more concentrated group of 90 pear exporters (66.5% for the top five) compared to 194 importing countries, islands, and territories for the top five importers (33.9%).

By continent, 48.7% of globally imported pears went to European countries, followed by Asia (30.3%), North America (10.7%), Latin America excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean (7.5%), Africa (2.3%), and Oceania (0.4%) mostly buyers in New Zealand and Australia.

Globally, the average unit price paid by pear importers was $1,252 per ton in 2022, reflecting an 8.3% increase from the average tonnage rate of $1,156 in 2021.

For research purposes, the 6-digit Harmonized Tariff System code for fresh pears is 081070.
