In 2022, global exports of cinnamon amounted to a total of US$765.8 million.
Export figures for cinnamon have seen a steady increase, with an average growth of 10.8% since 2018 when export sales amounted to $665.1 million.
However, there was a notable decrease of -30.4% in overall export revenues for this aromatic spice compared to the previous year, with 2021 seeing sales reach $1.1 billion.
Cinnamon, known for its strong flavor and aroma, is commonly used in sweet and savory Asian dishes, spice mixes, and various beverages and baked goods.
Guatemala, situated in Central America and sharing its northern border with Mexico, is a significant player in the cinnamon market.
The top five exporters of cinnamon (Guatemala, India, Indonesia, Nepal, and the Netherlands) accounted for a substantial 92.5% of all cinnamon exported in 2022.
Latin American countries, excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean, were the largest suppliers of exported cinnamon in 2022, contributing $422.8 million or 55.2% of the global total. Asian exporters followed at 39.1%, with Europe accounting for 5.1% of exports.
On the import side, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, mainland China, India, and Bangladesh were the top importing countries, collectively purchasing nearly three-fifths (57.9%) of globally imported cinnamon in terms of dollar value.
While the top five exporters are highly concentrated, with only 86 countries contributing to 92.5% of the global market, there are 153 importing countries, indicating a more diversified market for cinnamon imports.
Imported cinnamon saw an increase in average unit price in 2022, with non-crushed and unground cinnamon priced at $11,931 per ton, down -20% from 2021. Processed cinnamon, however, commanded a lower average unit price of $10,936 per ton, down -31.3% from the previous year.
By Harmonized Tariff System codes, non-crushed and unground cinnamon (090831) accounted for 94.9% of global cinnamon exports, while crushed or ground cinnamon (090832) made up the remaining 5.1%.

The fastest-growing exporters since 2021 were Vietnam (up 478.9%), Türkiye (up 73.5%), Finland (up 36.9%), and Tanzania (up 33%), while the United Arab Emirates, Bhutan, Singapore, the United Kingdom, and the United States saw declines in their cinnamon export revenues.

The average tonnage charge for the top importer, the United Arab Emirates, was lower at $9,241 per ton.
Countries paying the lowest average unit prices for imported raw cinnamon included Liberia, Senegal, and Tanzania, while Hungary, Ireland, and Switzerland paid the highest average unit prices.
Imported Crushed or Ground Cinnamon: Lowest and Highest Unit Prices
In 2022, the average unit price for imports of crushed or ground cinnamon was US$10,936 per ton, down -31.3% from 2021.
The top importer, the United States, paid a higher average unit price of $11,168 per ton.
Countries paying the lowest average unit prices for imported crushed or ground cinnamon included Honduras, Hong Kong, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, while Finland, Morocco, and Russia paid the highest average unit prices.
