In 2023, global wheat imports amounted to a total of $64.7 billion in international transactions.


The overall value of wheat imports across all purchasing nations surged by 45.9% compared to 2019, when total wheat purchases stood at $44.3 billion.


However, from 2022 to 2023, worldwide expenditure on imported wheat declined by 15.5%, dropping from $76.5 billion in the previous year.


The top five wheat-importing nations—mainland China, Egypt, Indonesia, Türkiye, and Italy—collectively accounted for 28.6% of the total wheat imports recorded in 2023.


From a continental standpoint, Asia emerged as the leading importer of wheat in 2023, with purchases valued at $28.4 billion, representing 44% of the global total.


Following Asia, Africa ranked second with 23.6%, while Europe accounted for 20.3% of global wheat imports.


Other regions recorded smaller shares:

· Latin America (excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean) accounted for 7.8%

· North America made up 3.6%

· Oceania, led by New Zealand and Papua New Guinea, contributed 0.6%
