In 2023, worldwide onion exports reached a total value of approximately US$5.1 billion.
Compared to 2019, when the global onion trade was valued at $4.26 billion, the total export value has increased by an average of 19% over the five-year period.
On a year-over-year basis, international sales of onions grew by 15.9%, up from $4.38 billion in 2022.
The top five onion-exporting nations in 2023 were the Netherlands, China, India, Mexico, and the United States, which together accounted for 63.4% of total global onion exports. This indicates a relatively concentrated export market dominated by a few key players.
By region, Europe led the way in 2023, exporting onions worth around $2 billion, which made up 39% of the global total. Asia followed with a 32.7% share, while North America contributed 15.9%.
Smaller contributions came from Africa at 6.4%, Latin America (excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean) at 3.4%, and Oceania, primarily New Zealand and Australia, at 2.7%.
For reference, onions and shallots are categorized under the 6-digit Harmonized Tariff System (HTS) code 070310. Shallots, which resemble smaller onions, are often used in pickling or as a culinary substitute for onions.

3.India: $642.4 million (12.7%)
4.Mexico: $448.2 million (8.8%)
5.United States: $298.7 million (5.9%)
6.Spain: $261.8 million (5.2%)
7.Egypt: $206.8 million (4.1%)
8.Poland: $144.8 million (2.9%)
9.New Zealand: $105.3 million (2.1%)
10.Peru: $103.7 million (2%)
11.France: $102.6 million (2%)
12.Myanmar: $77.8 million (1.5%)
13.Pakistan: $69.6 million (1.4%)
14.Germany: $64.3 million (1.3%)
15.Canada: $58.4 million (1.2%)
Combined, these 15 nations were responsible for 86.9% of all onion exports in 2023.
Among these exporters, the most significant year-on-year growth came from Myanmar (+101.8%), Pakistan (+53.5%), Spain (+42.1%), and the Netherlands (+37.7%).
Conversely, some countries saw a decrease in export value, including Canada (-27%), Egypt (-7.7%), the USA (-7%), and Peru (-2.5%).
