In 2023, global pasta exports reached an impressive US$15 billion, underscoring the strong demand for this popular food product across international markets.
This figure reflects a 42.8% increase from 2019, when worldwide pasta exports were valued at $10.5 billion. Compared to 2022's total of $14.5 billion, the pasta export market grew by 3.2% year over year.
This data includes both fresh and dried pasta varieties.
In traditional Italian cuisine, pasta—whether fresh or dried—is commonly prepared in three primary ways: served with sauces as a main dish, included in soups, or baked in casseroles and other oven-prepared meals.
As in previous years, the top five pasta-exporting nations in 2023 were Italy, China (Mainland), South Korea, Türkiye, and Thailand. Combined, these countries accounted for 56.2% of total global pasta exports.
From a regional perspective, Europe dominated with $8 billion in exports, representing 53.1% of the global total. Asia followed with 37.5%, while North American exporters contributed another 4.6%.
Other regions had smaller shares: Africa (3.2%), Latin America (1.4%)—excluding Mexico but including Caribbean countries—and Oceania (0.2%), led by New Zealand, Fiji, and Australia.
For classification purposes, pasta exports are tracked using the 4-digit HS Code 1902, which includes both cooked and uncooked products.
In 2023, uncooked pasta accounted for 55.4% of total pasta exports, while cooked pasta made up the remaining 44.6%.
Fun fact: World Pasta Day is observed annually on October 25.
