The global frozen fish market remained a significant sector in 2023, with total exports of whole frozen fish reaching a value of $25.2 billion across all participating countries.
Compared to 2019, when the global export total stood at $25.1 billion, this reflects a modest 0.7% growth over a five-year span. However, on a yearly basis, export values declined by 8.9% from $27.7 billion in 2022.
The five leading exporters—Russia, mainland China, Chile, the United States, and Norway—jointly contributed 41.6% of the global market for whole frozen fish in 2023.
From a continental perspective, Europe was the dominant supplier of frozen fish in 2023, generating $8.9 billion in export revenue, or approximately 36.3% of the total. Asia followed with a 32.8% share, while Latin America (excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean) held 11.3%.
The remaining shares came from North America (8%), Africa (6.3%), and Oceania (5.3%), with key contributions from nations such as New Zealand, Micronesia, and Vanuatu.
For classification purposes, the Harmonized System (HS) Code for frozen whole fish (excluding fillets) is 0303.
