In 2023, the international trade value of knitted or crocheted t-shirts reached $51.8 billion, based on export figures from countries around the globe.
Compared to 2019, when global exports stood at $47.2 billion, this marks a 9.8% increase over five years. However, on a year-over-year basis, export revenue saw a decline of 10.5% from $57.9 billion in 2022.
The top five exporting nations—China, Bangladesh, Germany, Vietnam, and Türkiye—together accounted for 48.8% of total t-shirt export sales in 2023.
When broken down by continent, Asia led the way, exporting $28.7 billion worth of t-shirts, or 55.4% of the global total. Europe followed with a 30.5% share. Other regions contributed smaller portions: Latin America (excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean) at 6.8%, North America at 4.5%, Africa at 2.7%, and Oceania (primarily Australia and New Zealand) at 0.1%.

Cotton remains the leading textile for t-shirt production, with exports valued at $35.8 billion, representing 69.2% of total global shipments. T-shirts made from non-cotton fabrics generated $15.9 billion, or 30.8%.
Exports of cotton t-shirts dropped 11.7% compared to 2022, while non-cotton variants experienced a smaller decline of 7.8%.
For reference, the HS Code used for knitted or crocheted t-shirts is 6109, with cotton variants under 610910 and non-cotton types categorized as 610990.
