In 2023, global exports of tomatoes reached a total of $11.6 billion USD.
This represents a 23.5% increase over the past five years, rising from $9.4 billion in 2019. On a yearly basis, exports climbed by 7.6% from the $10.8 billion recorded in 2022.
Once again, the five leading tomato exporters in 2023 were Mexico, the Netherlands, Spain, Morocco, and France. Combined, these countries accounted for a dominant 69.9% of all tomato export revenues.
This highlights a highly concentrated market, especially since Mexico alone contributed 26.3% of the total global tomato export value, making it the top exporter by a significant margin.
By continent, European nations led the way, generating $5.1 billion or 44% of total global tomato export value. North America followed, with a 33.6% share. Africa contributed 11.2%, while Asian exporters made up 10.6% of the total.
Smaller contributions came from:
· Latin America (excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean): 0.6%
· Oceania (mainly Australia and New Zealand): 0.1%
For classification purposes, fresh or chilled tomatoes fall under Harmonized Tariff System code 0702.

On the other hand, mainland China saw a significant drop of -41.7%, while Azerbaijan's exports declined by -3.4%.
