A nutrient-dense leafy green, fresh or chilled spinach saw worldwide exports reach a total of $845.9 million in 2023.
Over a five-year period, the total export value for spinach increased by 112%, growing from $399 million in 2019. However, on a year-over-year basis, global spinach exports in 2023 declined by 7.7% compared to $916.7 million in 2022.
The top five most profitable exporters of fresh spinach last year were China, the United States, Italy, Mexico, and Spain. Together, these nations accounted for a massive 89.2% of global spinach export revenue, highlighting a heavily concentrated export market.
From a regional perspective, Asian exporters led the way, generating $364.2 million in revenue, which represents 43.1% of the global total. European exporters followed with a 29.7% share, while North America contributed 26.9%. Other regions, including Oceania (0.2%)—mainly Australia—Latin America (0.1%) excluding Mexico, and Africa (0.04%), accounted for significantly smaller portions of the market.
