In 2023, global coffee exports amounted to $42.3 billion. This represents a 42.8% increase from 2019, when the value of coffee exports was $29.6 billion.


However, from 2022 to 2023, the value of coffee exports dropped by 9%, from $46.4 billion.


The five largest coffee exporters—Brazil, Switzerland, Germany, Vietnam, and Colombia—accounted for nearly 43% of the total value of coffee exports during this period.


Looking at regional contributions, European suppliers led in coffee export value in 2023, with a total of $16.2 billion, or 38.4% of the global share. Latin America, excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean, followed with a 35.3% share, while Asia accounted for 13.1%.


Smaller contributions came from Africa (6.9%), North America (5.7%), and Oceania (0.7%), led by countries such as Papua New Guinea, Australia, and New Zealand.


For reference, coffee is classified under the Harmonized Tariff System code 0901.

Top 15 Coffee Exporting Countries in 2023

Below are the 15 countries that exported the highest value of coffee in 2023:

1. Brazil: $7.4 billion (17.4% of global coffee exports)

2. Switzerland: $3.6 billion (8.6%)

3. Germany: $3.41 billion (8.1%)

4. Vietnam: $3.38 billion (8%)

5. Colombia: $2.91 billion (6.9%)

6. Italy: $2.6 billion (6.1%)

7. Honduras: $1.7 billion (3.9%)

8. Belgium: $1.31 billion (3.1%)

9. France: $1.27 billion (3%)

10. Ethiopia: $1.22 billion (2.9%)

11. Netherlands: $1.2 billion (2.8%)

12. United States: $1.19 billion (2.8%)

13. Guatemala: $949.1 million (2.2%)

14. Indonesia: $929.1 million (2.2%)

15. Uganda: $831.7 million (2%)

These 15 countries accounted for approximately 80.1% of global coffee exports in 2023.


Among the fastest-growing exporters from 2022 to 2023 were Vietnam (up 14.5%), Italy (up 9%), Netherlands (up 8.3%), and France (up 7.2%).


On the other hand, countries that saw declines in their coffee exports included Colombia (down 29.1%), Indonesia (down 19.1%), Ethiopia (down 19%), Guatemala (down 15%), and Brazil (down 14%).
