Gravel, a loose aggregation of rock fragments, is essential for road surfacing, especially in rural areas with low traffic. It is categorized based on the size of its granules and plays a crucial role in the construction industry. In addition to its use for road building, gravel is combined with sand for producing asphalt and is also a key material in the manufacture of concrete blocks, bricks, and pipes. Other applications include making roofing shingles, supporting water filtration systems, and providing traction on icy roads. Additionally, gravel mixed with industrial sand is used in glass production.
The top five gravel exporters by value are Norway, Mainland China, Germany, France, and Belgium. Together, these countries accounted for about 40.5% of the global gravel export market in 2023, highlighting the dominance of these key players in the industry.
From a regional perspective, European countries were the largest exporters of gravel in 2023, shipping gravel worth $1.68 billion, or 63% of the global total. Asia ranked second with 23.9%, while North America contributed 8.5% to worldwide gravel exports. Smaller contributions came from Latin America (4%), excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean, as well as from Africa (0.4%) and Oceania (0.2%), primarily driven by New Zealand.
