In 2023, global paint exports of various types totaled an impressive $25.4 billion. This marks a 13.6% increase from the $22.3 billion exported in 2019, demonstrating the growing demand in the paint exports industry. However, year-over-year, total paint exports saw a slight decline of 1.7%, compared to the $25.8 billion in 2022.
A large majority of the paint exports in 2023, valued at $24.5 billion (96.7% of the total), was made from synthetic or chemically modified natural polymers. Only 3.3% of the global total, equating to $827.1 million, consisted of paint made from non-synthetic ingredients.
The top five countries dominating the paint exports market in 2023 were Germany, the United States, Italy, Japan, and the Netherlands. Together, these five nations accounted for 46.5% of all exported paints globally, showing their significant role in international paint exports.
Europe was the leading continent for paint exports, with European suppliers contributing $15.4 billion (60.8%) to the global total in 2023. Asia ranked second, supplying 20.9% of exported paints, followed by North America at 14.1%. Smaller contributions came from Latin America (2.1%, excluding Mexico), Africa (1.6%), and Oceania (0.5%) led by Australia and New Zealand.
For clarity, paints and varnishes made from synthetic or chemically modified natural polymers are categorized under the Harmonized Tariff System codes 3208 and 3209. Other types of paints fall under the code 3210. This analysis focuses on paint exports and excludes prepared pigments, opacifiers, and coloring substances classified under code 3207.

The 20 countries listed below exported the highest dollar value of paint exports in 2023:
1. Germany: $3.9 billion (15.5% of global paint exports)
2. United States: $2.9 billion (11.5% of total paint exports)
3. Italy: $1.9 billion (7.3% of paint exports)
4. Japan: $1.6 billion (6.4% of paint exports)
5. Netherlands: $1.5 billion (5.8% of paint exports)
6. Belgium: $1.4 billion (5.4% of paint exports)
7. France: $1.2 billion (4.6% of paint exports)
8. United Kingdom: $1.1 billion (4.2% of paint exports)
9. Spain: $898.2 million (3.5% of paint exports)
10. Mainland China: $897.8 million (3.5% of paint exports)
11. Poland: $751.1 million (3% of paint exports)
12. South Korea: $700.1 million (2.8% of paint exports)
13. Sweden: $524.7 million (2.1% of paint exports)
14. Canada: $468.9 million (1.8% of paint exports)
15. Türkiye: $436.7 million (1.7% of paint exports)
16. Austria: $404.9 million (1.6% of paint exports)
17. Malaysia: $316.9 million (1.2% of paint exports)
18. Switzerland: $309.4 million (1.2% of paint exports)
19. Singapore: $272.5 million (1.1% of paint exports)
20. Thailand: $220.1 million (0.9% of paint exports)
These countries collectively accounted for 85.2% of all paint exports in 2023.
Among these top exporters, Türkiye saw the highest growth in paint exports since 2019, increasing by 105%. Other significant increases were observed in Belgium (up 44.5%), mainland China (up 40.4%), and the Netherlands (up 37.8%). On the other hand, some countries saw a decline in paint exports, including Thailand (-12.1%), Japan (-12.4%), Sweden (-1.5%), and Singapore (-0.6%).
