Global exports of sweet peppers (also known as bell peppers) and chili
peppers reached a remarkable total of US$7.15 billion in 2023. This figure
highlights the thriving pepper export market, showing a 25% increase compared to
the $5.72 billion recorded five years earlier in 2019. Year-over-year,
international sales of these peppers surged by 14.2%, rising from $6.25 billion
in 2022.
The top five pepper export countries in 2023 were Spain, Mexico, the Netherlands, Canada, and the United States. Together, these nations accounted for nearly 74% of global exports, underlining the dominance of a few major players in the market. This concentrated supplier base plays a critical role in meeting global demand.
From a geographical perspective, European exporters led the pepper export market, with shipments valued at $3.48 billion, accounting for 48.7% of the global total. North American exporters followed closely, contributing 34.2%, while Asian exporters supplied 12.2% of the world's pepper exports. Smaller shares came from Africa (3.7%), Latin America (1%), and Oceania (0.2%).

Several countries saw notable growth in their pepper exports. Austria recorded an impressive 419.5% increase in exports, followed by Jordan (up 43.2%), France (up 37.8%), and mainland China (up 37%). In contrast, South Korea was the only major exporter to see a decline in 2023, with a year-over-year drop of 12.3%.
