In 2023, the total global sales of soap exports from all nations reached US$15 billion.
This marks a 26.8% increase in the value of soap exports compared to five years ago in 2019, when shipments were valued at $11.8 billion. However, on a year-over-year basis, there was a slight decline of -0.2% in soap exports compared to $15.02 billion in 2022.
The leading five exporters of soap are Germany, mainland China, the United States, Indonesia, and France. Together, these key suppliers accounted for 37% of total global soap export revenues in 2023.
When looking at the export figures by continent, European suppliers generated the highest revenue from soap exports, amounting to $6.4 billion, which is approximately 42.5% of the worldwide total. Asia followed closely with 35.5%, while North America contributed 13%. Smaller shares came from Latin America (4%), excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean, as well as Africa (4.2%) and Oceania (0.8%), with Australia and New Zealand leading in that region.
For classification purposes, the 4-digit Harmonized Tariff System (HTS) code for soap is 3401. This code encompasses both bar and liquid soaps, in addition to organic surface-active products and preparations.

The combined exports from these 15 countries constituted 72.1% of the total soap exports worldwide in 2023.
Among the leading exporters, the fastest-growing soap markets since 2022 included France (up 19.3%), mainland China (up 17.8%), South Korea (up 16.9%), and Poland (up 15%). Conversely, some countries experienced declines in their soap exports, including Japan (down -22.5%), Malaysia (down -11.4%), Germany (down -4.8%), the United Kingdom (down -3.6%), and Mexico (down -2.1%).
