Global exports of raw barley from all exporting countries reached a total of US$10.5 billion in 2023.
This marks a 53.4% increase in the total value of barley exports since 2019, when global shipments were valued at $6.86 billion. However, on a year-over-year basis, barley exports experienced a modest growth of 1.8%, rising from $10.3 billion in 2022.
Barley, a versatile grain, is commonly used in traditional dishes like soups, stews, and bread. Recently, it has gained popularity in health foods and remains essential for brewing malt beer. It also serves as animal fodder, making it a valuable agricultural product. As a member of the grass family, barley plays a significant role in food and agriculture.
In 2023, the top five barley exporters—Australia, France, Germany, Canada, and Argentina—accounted for nearly two-thirds (65%) of global barley sales. This concentration highlights the dominance of a few key players in the international barley market.
By region, Europe emerged as the leading supplier, exporting $6.3 billion worth of barley, or 59.8% of the global total. Oceania (primarily Australia and New Zealand) followed with 21.9%, while North America accounted for 8% and Latin America and the Caribbean made up 7.4%. Smaller contributions came from Asia (2.8%) and Africa (0.1%).
For research, the 4-digit Harmonized Tariff System (HTS) code for raw barley is 1003, with additional processed barley categories falling under the 1104 prefix.
