In 2023, global cotton export sales reached a total of US$51.8 billion.


Compared to 2019, when cotton exports were valued at $56.2 billion, the overall export value decreased by an average of 7.8% over the past five years. Year-on-year, the total dollar value of cotton exports declined by 18.9% compared to the $63.8 billion in 2022.


The leading cotton exporters include mainland China, the United States, India, Brazil, and Pakistan. These five countries together accounted for almost 59.4% of the global cotton exports in 2023, demonstrating their dominance in the market.


From a regional perspective, Asian countries contributed the largest share of cotton exports, representing 57% of the global total. North American exporters accounted for 14.9%, followed by Europe with 10.3%, and Latin America, excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean, with 7.4%.


Smaller contributions came from Oceania (5.7%), mainly from Australia, and Africa (4.6%).


For classification purposes, cotton falls under the two-digit Harmonized Tariff System code 52, which includes raw cotton, yarn, thread, and woven fabrics.

Top Cotton Exporters in 2023

The following are the top 15 countries by cotton export value in 2023:

1. Mainland China: US$10.7 billion (20.6% of global cotton exports)

2. United States: $7.3 billion (14.1%)

3. India: $6.5 billion (12.5%)

4. Brazil: $3.2 billion (6.2%)

5. Pakistan: $3.1 billion (5.9%)

6. Vietnam: $2.98 billion (5.7%)

7. Australia: $2.95 billion (5.7%)

8. Türkiye: $2.1 billion (4.1%)

9. Italy: $1.2 billion (2.3%)

10. Uzbekistan: $792.7 million (1.5%)

11. Germany: $734.2 million (1.4%)

12. Spain: $546.8 million (1.1%)

13. Egypt: $523 million (1%)

14. Benin: $515.5 million (1%)

15. Indonesia: $483.5 million (0.9%)

These top 15 nations collectively accounted for 84.1% of global cotton exports in 2023.


Among the leading exporters, the countries that experienced the smallest decreases in cotton exports from 2022 were Australia (-4.3%), Germany (-4.7%), Benin (-5.1%), and India (-6.5%).


On the other hand, the largest drops in cotton export values were seen in Uzbekistan (-50.7% from 2022), the United States (-32.1%), Indonesia (-27.4%), Egypt (-21.9%), and mainland China (-19.6%).
