Argentina is a significant exporter of beef and ranks among the countries with the highest per capita beef consumption in the world.
In January 2024, the National Agricultural Health and Quality Service (SENASA) of Argentina approved the export of all types of beef, whether fresh, chilled, or frozen.
Through Decree No. 911/21 ("21" indicating from the year 2021), President Fernández halted the transportation of various beef products, including barbecue, vacuum-packed brisket, flank, skirt steak, Matambre, tapa de asado, meat cuts, and shoulder. Decree No. 911 came into effect in January 2022 and is valid until December 31, 2023.
According to data from the Argentine Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries collected by consulting firm Safras & Mercado, the total shipment of beef (with and without bones) from Argentina in 2023 amounted to 682,000 tons. This marked a 7.7% increase from the 633,000 tons exported in 2022.
Fernando Iglesias, an analyst at Safras & Mercado, stated, "This growth trend is closely related to China, which purchased 73% of the boneless meat and almost all bone-in meat sold by Argentina."
In its latest report on January 12, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) forecasted a 5.1% growth in Argentina's beef and veal production, reaching 3.3 million tons. It also predicted a 4.7% increase in domestic consumption, reaching 2.43 million tons.
