Types of Tea Exported from China:

Chinese tea export data shows that the majority (83.7%) of exported tea is green tea, followed by black tea (8.9%) and oolong tea (5.2%). Notably, according to China's record system, jasmine green tea is categorized as flower tea, separate from green tea exports.

Breaking down the categories, the 2023 annual export volume of green tea was 309,400 tons, representing 84.2% of the total, a 1.4% YoY decrease. Black tea export volume was 29,900 tons, constituting 7.9% of total exports, down 12.6% from 2022. Oolong tea export volume was 19,900 tons, making up 5.4% of total exports, with a 3.0% YoY increase. Jasmine tea export volume was 6,209 tons, accounting for 1.7% of total exports, experiencing a decrease of 298 tons (4.6%). Notably, Pu'er tea export volume was only 1,719 tons, a 10.3% decrease from 2022. Additionally, white tea, black tea, and other flower teas had export volumes of 580 tons, 427 tons, and 245 tons, respectively.

Top Export Destinations for Chinese Tea:

In recent years, major destinations for Chinese tea exports include Morocco, Uzbekistan, and Ghana. Morocco leads significantly, with an export volume exceeding 75,000 tons, representing 20.1% of China's annual export total. Morocco is renowned for its tea-drinking culture, such as Moroccan mint tea, as well as its tea packaging and re-export trade. From the list of export destinations, Russia (19,700 tons) ranks as the fifth-largest exporter, and the United States (13,000 tons) accounts for approximately 3.5% of China's annual export total. Despite geopolitical tensions with the United States and Russia, China's exports to both countries increased by 18.5% and 8.6%, respectively, compared to 2021. This may be attributed in part to decreases in exports to Sri Lanka and Kenya, highlighting the resilience of Chinese tea in addressing international political conflicts.
