Kenya's moratorium on the export of avocados by sea, imposed in November
2023, will end on March 1st. The decision was prompted by concerns over the
ripeness and quality of the fruit in the export market.
To ensure the resumption of exports, the Agri-Food Authority (AFA) conducted a field survey from January 7 to 12 to assess the ripeness and quantity of the fruit. As a result of the survey, AFA Acting Director General Christine Chesaro determined that the fruit had reached the required level of ripeness and quantity for export.
However, ocean exports of the Fuerte and Hass varieties will remain limited to size code 20 (184 grams) until the open export window begins. The measure is aimed at discouraging the export of unripe fruit, a practice that has previously damaged Kenya's reputation in international markets.
AFA emphasized the importance of avocado traders complying with regulatory and market requirements. Exporters are required to apply for inspection three days prior to shipment, provide a list of Horticultural Products Marketing Agents (HPMAs) or suppliers, and monitor production and post-production processes.
Failure to comply may result in penalties for exporters or their agents. AFA specifically targets the transportation of avocados without crates or in open pickup trucks, which is a violation of horticultural regulations.
