Chemicals play an important role in our daily lives and are involved in almost every commodity sector in the world.
In 2022, global chemical export sales totaled $769.3 billion. Total organic and inorganic chemical exports grew 18.6% year-on-year, up from $648.4 billion in 2021.
The top 5 global exporters of organic and inorganic chemicals are mainland China, the U.S., Germany, Ireland, and South Korea, which together accounted for 45.2% of international chemical export sales in 2022.
Chemical Exporting Countries
The following are the top 10 countries exporting chemicals by value in 2022, including both organic and inorganic chemicals:
1. China: $141.3 billion (18.4% of total chemical exports)
2. United States: $67.9 billion (8.8%)
3. Germany: $49.5 billion (6.4%)
4. Ireland: $48.5 billion (6.3%)
5. Korea: $40.4 billion (5.2%)
6. Belgium: $38 billion (4.9%)
7. Switzerland: $31.8 billion (4.1%)
8. Netherlands: $31.1 billion (4%)
9. Japan: $27.7 billion (3.6%)
10. India: $25.1 billion (3.3%)
In terms of value, the 15 countries listed above account for about three-quarters (75.9%) of global chemical exports in 2022.
Among the above countries, the fastest-growing chemical exporters since 2018 are mainland China (up 76.7%), Switzerland (up 49.3%), Ireland (up 43.7%) and Germany (up 37.2%).
Three major suppliers experienced declines in chemical export sales over this 5-year period, namely Singapore (down -16.4% from 2018), Belgium (down -8.9%) and Taiwan (down -2%).
